How millions of dollars have been recovered from N.J., N.Y. toll evaders
If you’re considering throwing away that toll bill for using Port Authority bridges and tunnels – don’t. The bi-state agency’s police department issued 27% more summonses to toll evaders last year, officials said. Courts also awarded the agency $18 million in judgements in civil suits brought against toll scofflaws that owed tens of thousand of dollars in unpaid tolls and fines.
Trump ends NYC congestion pricing toll, but N.J. commuters won’t get an immediate break
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy made good on President Donald Trump’s promise to end New York City’s congestion pricing toll, pulling its federal approvals Wednesday. Duffy called the program that charges a $9 fee to enter Lower Manhattan a “slap in the face to working class Americans and business people.” Duffy rescinded the November 2024 agreement that allowed it to start on Jan. 5. He wrote to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul this morning.
Florida AG shuts down fake SunPass sites targeting toll users with phishing scams
The Florida Attorney General’s (AG) Office is cracking down on fraudulent SunPass websites. Last week, the AG’s office announced in collaboration with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Cyber Fraud Analytical Support Team that it had shut down hundreds of fraudulent websites that target SunPass users with fake toll notices and phishing schemes. The AG’s office says the scams are in an attempt to steal people’s personal and financial information.
Washington Lawmakers Propose $1.6 Billion in Tolls for I-5 Bridge Replacement
On Wednesday, Washington State lawmakers introduced bills to raise $1.6 billion from tolls to help pay for the construction of a replacement bridge on Interstate 5. The bills introduced in the state House and Senate authorize the sale of $1.6 billion in general obligation bonds. The borrowed money would be repaid with toll proceeds, gas taxes and vehicle fees. Because the bonds would be backed by the full faith and credit of the state, the general fund could be tapped as a last-resort source of repayment.
New Jersey Lawmaker Says E-ZPass Foreign Contract Not a Done Deal Yet, Moves to Block It
A New Jersey lawmaker is raising concerns over a state transportation contract awarded to a Singapore-based company with alleged ties to the Chinese Communist Party. The deal, which involves managing the E-ZPass toll system, is not yet finalized, according to Assemblyman Paul Kanitra, who says Republicans are working to prevent its completion.
